Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of cultural capital and related factors of pre-elderly people residing in urban areas. Particular attention was paid to the effects of inherited cultural capital from their parents, educational achievement, and social networks on the level of acquired cultural capital. Four dimensions of cultural capital were assessed.: familiarity, activity, information, and interest to cultural activities. Data were collected from 1713 people, residing in four cities(Seoul, Gwangju, Jeonju, and Chungju), aged from 50 to 69 in 2009, using structured questionnaires. Main results were the following: The level of acquired cultural capital of pre-elderly was relatively low in general, yet there existed differences depending on the specific dimensions of cultural capital. The level of acquired cultural capital of respondents was significantly higher than the level of inherited cultural capital from parents. Inherited cultural capital, educational achievement, and the size of formal network were all significantly related to the current level of acquired cultural capital. Gender and employment status were also significantly related to the level of acquired cultural capital. These findings imply that cultural capital is a life-long outcome affected by various situations over the life course.
